Othello Tower is a castle-keep guarding Famagusta harbour, remodelled in the Venetian period. The winged-lion relief at its entrance represents the Lion of St. Mark, symbol of Venice. The castle takes its name from Shakespeare's play Othello; the play's setting in a Cypriot harbour popularised the link (the historical connection is debated).
The inner courtyard, great halls and harbour views from the walls are the highlights of a visit. As it lies on the same route as the Famagusta Walls and the Lala Mustafa Pasha Mosque, it is easily added to an old-city tour. Exhibitions and events are occasionally held inside.
