Kyrenia Castle is one of North Cyprus's most recognisable landmarks, rising at the eastern end of the town's historic harbour. Its imposing form is the result of layers added by successive civilisations: the Byzantines built the first core in the 7th century against Arab raids, the Lusignans expanded it, and the Venetians thickened the walls in the 16th century to withstand cannon fire, giving it today's massive silhouette.
The interior is an open-air museum in itself. Ramps and stairways lead from the courtyards up to the ramparts, where a panorama of the harbour, the boats and the Pentadaktylos mountains opens up. Inside you will also find the world-famous Shipwreck Museum, a Byzantine chapel, dungeons and period exhibits.
The most rewarding time to visit is late afternoon and sunset, when the harbour and walls glow in golden light — ideal for photos. The steps are steep, so comfortable shoes are recommended. The cafés and fish restaurants lining the harbour make a natural next stop.
