North Cyprus (TRNC) packs a lot into a small area: the fairy-tale harbour and castle of Kyrenia, the St. Hilarion, Buffavento and Kantara castles on the Pentadaktylos range, Selimiye Mosque and Büyük Han inside the Nicosia walls, the ancient city of Salamis and the Venetian walls of Famagusta, and the wild golden beaches and wild donkeys of Karpaz. Spring (April-June) and autumn (September-October) are ideal for both sightseeing and swimming. July-August is very hot; visit castles early in the morning for comfort.
Castles and ancient sites (Kyrenia Castle, St. Hilarion, Salamis) usually charge a modest entry fee. Beaches, viewpoints and villages are mostly free, though some beach clubs charge for loungers.
